Question:  Since all dogs in Europe are microchipped with an electronic circuit, I am wondering if I can use a zapper on my dog.  Thanks for the answer.  Best regards. M

Answer: The microchip implanted in the dog is a likely to be a passive RFID chip compliant with the ISO 11784/11785 standard (standard in EU). These microchips are entirely passive, meaning they have no internal power source and only become active when exposed to an external radio frequency (RF) magnetic field, typically around 134.2 kHz. When activated, they transmit a unique 15-digit identification number to a nearby scanner.

Based on this, it’s highly unlikely that a zapper would interfere with the microchip, for several reasons:

-Delivery method: The AutoZap delivers current through direct skin contact (conductive coupling), whereas RFID microchips respond only to radiated electromagnetic fields (inductive coupling).

-Signal strength: The output of the AutoZap is very low-power—far below the level usually required to activate a passive RFID chip.

Frequency: The frequencies used by such generators (often in the range  of tens to hundreds of Hz, sometimes up to a few kHz) are significantly  different from the 134.2 kHz resonant frequency needed to power the microchip.

Waveform: RFID systems require an alternating (AC) electromagnetic field to induce power in the chip’s coil. The AutoZap produces pulsed DC  (unipolar) signals, which do not generate the alternating magnetic field  necessary for RFID activation.

As a precaution I would avoid placing the AutoZap’s contacts within 2–3  cm of the microchip (typically located between the shoulder blades).  Also, I would monitor the animal during the first zapping session for  any signs of discomfort or unusual behaviour.

We have many customers in the EU who use the zapper with their pet, and  we have never heard of any negative reactions. Incidentally, the FlexZappicator, which does produce a RF signal, is also safe for use, for the reasons listed above
